Production ofπ0andηmesons at large transverse momenta inppandet al.

Abstract: We present results on the production of high transverse momentum π 0 and η mesons in pp and pBe interactions at 530 and 800 GeV/c. The data span the kinematic ranges: 1 < p T < 10 GeV/c in transverse momentum and 1.5 units in rapidity. The inclusive π 0 cross sections are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations and to expectations based on a phenomenological parton-k T model.

“…In the following, we will consider neutral-pion production pp → π 0 X at two center-of-mass energies, √ s = 31.5 GeV and √ s = 200 GeV. The former corresponds to one of the energies used in the Fermilab fixed-target experiment E706 [69], while the latter is relevant for experiments at RHIC. Although we will not present any actual comparisons to data, we adopt the proper kinematics for these two cases, integrating over pseudorapidity |η| ≤ 0.75 in the E706 case and over |η| ≤ 0.35 for RHIC, corresponding to measurements by the PHENIX collaboration [70], and considering the cross sections as functions of pion transverse momentum, p T .…”

“…The recent data analyzed in this Letter are summarized in Table I. The data sets include π 0 measurements by the E706 at FNAL [11] and by the PHENIX collaboration at RHIC [9,12]. At higher energies, the measurements of charged hadrons (or charged tracks [14]) in p-p collisions at √ s = 630, 1800 GeV by CDF [13,14] and √ s = 500, 900 GeV by UA1 [15] are included in the analysis.…”

“…Our starting point is the analysis of the cross section data in a broad kinematic region in the framework of perturbative QCD (pQCD), at nextto-leading order (NLO). It is a common belief that it should be best working in the central region, namely, for a π 0 produced near 90 o , in the center-ofmass system, although some authors have argued that the phenomenological inclusion of intrinsic k T effects leads to a better agreement between theory and data [11]. The inclusive invariant cross section for the reaction pp → π 0 X reads…”

“…Note added : After this paper was completed, L. Bland and A. Ogawa have compared PYTHIA calculations of the invariant cross section with STAR and ISR data and they confirm our conclusions. [11,16,19,20,21] and the curves are the corresponding NLO pQCD calculations with µ = p T (solid lines) and µ = p T /2 (dotted-dashed lines).…”
