Production of intergeneric somatic hybrids between round kumquat (Fortunella japonica Swingle) and ?Morita navel? orange (Citrus sinensis Osbeck)

Abstract: Intergeneric somatic hybrids between embryogenic callus-derived protoplasts of round kumquat (Fortunella japonica Swingle) and 'Morita navel' orange (Citrus sinensis Osbeck) were produced by electrofusion. Among the eight different fusion strains obtained, six showed normal morphology, whereas the remaining two showed malformation. All the regenerated plants were intermediate in leaf morphology and had thick and round leaves, which are typical characteristics of polyploids. Ploidy analyses by flow cytometry an… Show more

“…A morfologia dos híbridos simétricos interespecíficos e intergenéricos é, geralmente, intermediária a dos genitores. Características, como folhas mais espessas, arredondadas, normalmente mais escuras e com pecíolo alado maior ou intermediário aos parentais e glândulas de óleo aparentes na face abaxial, podem ser comparadas com os genitores para a comprovação da hibridação (Takami et al, 2004). Plantas com morfologia intermediária têm também sido derivadas de fusões assimétricas.…”

“…But presence of mitochondrion from one fusion parent has been reported in some intergeneric somatic hybrids (Kirti et al, 1992a;Nakajo et al, 1994;Wolters et al, 1995;Liu et al, 2002b;Vasilenko et al, 2003;Xu et al, 2004;Takami et al, 2004). It is not clear why mitochondrial genomes undergo frequent recombination or rearrangement in the somatic hybrids.…”

“…were fused-targeting blight, Citrus tristeza virus, and Phytophthora-induced disease tolerance (Calixto et al, 2004). Intergeneric somatic hybrids between round kumquat (Fortunella japonica Swingle) and 'Morita' navel orange were produced to create novel parents for interploid crosses aimed to develop new seedless kumquatlike cultivars (Takami et al, 2004).…”
