Production of hydrogen in the reaction between aluminum and water in the presence of NaOH and KOH

Abstract: -The objective of this work is to investigate the production of hydrogen as an energy source by means of the reaction of aluminum with water. This reaction only occurs in the presence of NaOH and KOH, which behave as catalysts. The main advantages of using aluminum for indirect energy storage are: recyclability, nontoxicity and easiness to shape. Alkali concentrations varying from 1 to 3 mol . L -1 were applied to different metallic samples, either foil (0.02 mm thick) or plates (0.5 and 1 mm thick), and react… Show more

“…Thereby, the aluminum speciation in solution reveals the presence of monomeric and oligomeric aluminates ranging from 6-to 5-and 4-coordination numbers [57][58][59] . The aluminum coordination in solution has been considered as an important feature for phase structure when organic additives or solvents are employed 59,60 . As mentioned above (section 1), the aluminum oxidation in H 2 O-EtOH under sonication with a higher fraction of ethanol in aqueous mixture (i.e.…”

“…Samples with plain BAW or BAM have the lowest total generated heat. It is known that the reaction of metallic aluminium sample with water or other solution with auxiliary alkali generates 50-70 kJ/mol of heat [71]. Therefore, it can be calculated that the metallic aluminium can produce 13-18 J or 7-9 J of heat per gram of BAW or BAM, respectively.…”

“…Hence, the spontaneous reaction of aluminum in this alkaline solution did not require external heating during the process. This high concentration and temperature facilitated the formation of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) layers that allows further corrosion of aluminum metal (Porciúncula et al, 2012). Introducing a direct current electricity lead to increase flow rate of hydrogen gas of this aluminum corrosion reaction.…”
