Production of Highly Polarized Positrons Using Polarized Electrons at MeV Energies

Abstract: International audienceThe Polarized Electrons for Polarized Positrons experiment at the injector of the Continuous ElectronBeam Accelerator Facility has demonstrated for the first time the efficient transfer of polarization fromelectrons to positrons produced by the polarized bremsstrahlung radiation induced by a polarized electronbeam in a high-Z target. Positron polarization up to 82% have been measured for an initial electron beammomentum of 8.19 MeV=c, limited only by the electron beam polarization. This t… Show more

“…In fact, precise measurements of spin-dependent processes enable searches of physics beyond the Standard Model that can compete with direct searches at high-energy accelerators [5]. In addition to their intrinsic interest, polarized electron beams can also be employed to generate polarized beams of photons [6] and positrons [7] which, in turn, can be employed to address long-standing problems such as the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe.…”

“…Other methods based on spin filters [16], Stern-Gerlach-like beam splitters [17], and radiative polarization [18] also yield relatively low currents. The low attainable electric currents noticeably limit experiments with polarized beams [1][2][3] as well as the flux and the brightness of the polarized photon and positron beams attainable from polarized electron beams [6,7].…”

“…This opens access to polarized positon beams to a wide community and without creating a highly radioactive environment. The experiment demonstrates highly efficient transfer of polarization from 8.19 MeV/c primary electrons to the produced positrons [18].…”

“…A new approach, referred to as Polarized Electrons for Polarized Positrons (PEPPo) technique [16,17,18], has been investigated at the CEBAF of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Taking advantage of advances in high polarization, high intensity electron sources [28], it exploits the fact that polarized photons generated by the bremsstrahlung radiation of low energy longitudinally polarized electrons within a high-Z target produce polarized e + e --pairs.…”

“…The charge lifetime for a polarized gun also needs to be improved an order of magnitude for a realistic polarized electron source for the proposed cost effective ERL based EIC [17]. A high current polarized electron source can also be used in producing a high intensity polarized positron beam, which can be used in various collider applications [18].…”
