Production of "ectopic" vasoactive intestinal peptide-like and neurotensin-like immunoreactivity in human pheochromocytoma cell cultures

Abstract: Neoplastic chromaffin cells from human pheochromocytomas can exhibit extensive spontaneous and nerve growth factor (NGF)-induced outgrowth of neurite-like processes in vitro, despite the absence of such processes in vivo. To determine whether acquisition of neuron-like features by human pheochromocytoma cells in culture is accompanied by functional alterations, process outgrowth, vasoactive intestinal peptide-like immunoreactivity ( VIPLI ), neurotensin-like immunoreactivity (NTLI), and catecholamine content w… Show more

“…Tumours of the lung (SCLC), MTC, phaeochromocytoma and NETs arising from the kidney have also been reported to produce VIP (Said & Faloona 1975, Tischler et al 1984. Calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) is derived from the calcitonin gene as a result of alternative processing of calcitonin mRNA; this is widely distributed in the thyroid and neural tissues of brain, gut and perivascular tissue (Herrera et al 1992), whereas VIP is the major product in the central and peripheral nervous system (Herrera et al 1992).…”

“…Ndel1/EOPA, is a thiol-sensitive enzyme inactivates physiologically important peptides such as bradykinin and neurotensin, and also converts opioid oligopeptides into enkephalins (Camargo et al, 1973(Camargo et al, , 1983(Camargo et al, , 1987Gomes et al, 1993;Hayashi et al, 2000. The contribution of bradykinin and neurotensin neuropeptides in neurite outgrowth was also previously described (Zhao et al, 2003;Tischler et al, 1991;Robson and Burgoyne, 1989;Tischler et al, 1984).…”

“…Cases of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) secretion causing typical watery diarrhoea has been described secondary to SCLC, MTC, phaeochromocytoma and NETs arising from the kidney (Said & Faloona 1975, Tischler et al 1984. Glucagonlike peptides (GLP) 1 and 2 are hormones derived from the post-translational processing of pro-glucagon in the intestinal L cells that influence intestinal motility and small bowel growth, respectively.…”
