Production of Diesel-Like Fuel and Other Value-Added Chemicals from Pyrolysis of Animal Fat

Abstract: Pyrolysis of lard was performed in a fixed-bed reactor to produce a diesel-like fuel. Lard was fed into the reactor at 5 g/h using N 2 (3 × 10 -5 -7 × 10 -5 m 3 /min) as carrier gas. The liquid product obtained at a temperature of 600 °C, carrier gas flow rate of 5 × 10 -5 m 3 /min, and quartz packing particle size of 0.7-1.4 mm has a cetane index of 46, specific gravity of 0.86, and a higher heating value of 40 MJ/kg. This study shows that there is a potential for producing diesel-like liquid from pyrolysis o… Show more

“…Kerihuel et al [4] analyzed the lower heating values of animal fat-based fuels and the results obtained of the calorimeter test were 38.3 kJ kg À1 for animal fat and 42.5 kJ kg À1 for standard diesel. Besides biodiesel production, beef tallow can be used to produce alternative diesel fuels in an attempt to reduce the cost of raw materials [5] and [6].…”

“…To increase usage of these feedstocks, much attention has been paid to its use in the production of diesel-like fuels and/or other value-added chemicals [15]. Common production methods are pyrolysis [16,17], catalytic pyrolysis [18][19][20][21][22], and hydrogenation [23].…”
