Previous studies have reported that the survival rate of DHs was quite low: only 4–20% in zebrafish, Danio rerio (Hörstgen‐Schwark ); only 4 of 10 hatched fry survived to adulthood in medaka, Oryzias latipes (Naruse et al ); in the rosy bitterling, Rhodeus ocellatus , survival of DHs was 5.5% between hatching and 30 d posthatching (Kawamura ); and in a study of DH amago salmon, Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae , only 6 out of 98 (6.1%) first‐feeding DH survived until the spawning season 2 yr later (Kobayashi et al ). After hatching, there are two stages of massive mortality for DHs in Japanese flounder: the first‐feeding stage, with an unopened oral membrane, and the metamorphosis stage, which directly results in severe deformation, especially of the cranium and vertebral column.…”
