Production of Charmonium States inπBeCollisions at 515GeV/c

Abstract: We report on x c1 and x c2 production in the Feynman-x range 0.1 , x F , 0.8 in 515 GeV͞c p 2 Be collisions. The x c states are observed via their radiative decays into J͞c's. The resulting photons are detected either as showers in the electromagnetic calorimeter or after conversion in the target as e 1 e 2 pairs in the tracking system. The fraction of J͞c production due to x c1 and x c2 decays is 0.443 6 0.041 6 0.035. The ratio of the x c1 to x c2 cross section is 0.57 6 0.18 6 0.06. Our results on J͞c, c͑2S… Show more

“…The P -wave quarkonium states χ J are produced from quark pairs with S = 0, L = 1 followed by a spin-flip interaction with a transverse gluon from Γ. The calculated cross section ratio σ(χ 1 )/σ(χ 2 ) = 3/5, in agreement with the ratio measured in πN collisions for charmonium, 0.6 ± 0.3 [22,23]. We also find that due to the indirect χ cJ → J/ψ+γ contributions the total J/ψ polarization is slightly longitudinal, λ = −.14 (cf.…”

“…Statistical and systematic errors were quadratically summed. Figure 26 compares the feed-down fraction obtained from our χ c → J/ψ + γ measurement with other experiments over a broad range of collision energy and x F , as well as over many different colliding species [73,[77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84]. The value measured in this work, F J/ψ χc = 32 ± 9%, is consistent with the world average of 25 ± 5 % after accounting for A dependencies in the fixed target experiments [76] 4 .…”

“…We conclude that our model correctly describes the ψ ′ polarization data provided the rescattering involves transverse gluons (which implies Γ 0 = 0). Conclusions for the J/ψ are complicated by the fact that about 40% of the measured J/ψ cross section stems from χ c1,2 → J/ψ + γ radiative decays [18,19]. This component has not been removed in the polarization measurements.…”
