Microalgae-based carbon dioxide (CO2) biofixation and biorefinery are the most efficient methods of biological CO2 reduction and reutilization. The diversification and high-value byproducts of microalgal biomass, known as microalgae-based biorefinery, are considered the most promising platforms for the sustainable development of energy and the environment, in addition to the improvement and integration of microalgal cultivation, scale-up, harvest, and extraction technologies. In this review, the factors influencing CO2 biofixation by microalgae, including microalgal strains, flue gas, wastewater, light, pH, temperature, and microalgae cultivation systems are summarized. Moreover, the biorefinery of Chlorella biomass for producing biofuels and its byproducts, such as fine chemicals, feed additives, and high-value products, are also discussed. The technical and economic assessments (TEAs) and life cycle assessments (LCAs) are introduced to evaluate the sustainability of microalgae CO2 fixation technology. This review provides detailed insights on the adjusted factors of microalgal cultivation to establish sustainable biological CO2 fixation technology, and the diversified applications of microalgal biomass in biorefinery. The economic and environmental sustainability, and the limitations and needs of microalgal CO2 fixation, are discussed. Finally, future research directions are provided for CO2 reduction by microalgae.

The present work demonstrates high potential of Parachlorella kessleri IC-11 microalga biomass for the production of biogenic formic acid under hydrothermal conditions and an air atmosphere. Homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic approaches were applied and compared. The experiments were carried out in the presence of soluble H 5 PMo 10 V 2 O 40 and solid [(C 4 H 9 ) 4 N] 3.5 H 0.5 PMo 11 VO 40 bifunctional catalysts. The influence of reaction temperature and catalyst loading on the formic acid formation was revealed. Experimental data demonstrated that the microalgae biomass transformation to formic acid was limited by biomass depolymerization and hydrolysis processes, not the oxidation of intermediates to formic acid. H 5 PMo 10 V 2 O 40 allowed for formic acid to be obtained with better yields compared to [(C 4 H 9 ) 4 N] 3.5 H 0.5 PMo 11 VO 40 . Yields of 49 and 30 wt % of the target product were achieved over H 5 PMo 10 V 2 O 40 and [(C 4 H 9 ) 4 N] 3.5 H 0.5 PMo 11 VO 40, respectively. The solid catalyst demonstrated high stability in seven runs of the reaction at least while the activity of soluble heteropoly acid declined in the fifth reaction cycle.

This article investigates the integration of circular economy methodologies and biorefinery concepts for the sustainable recovery of bio‐based products from industrial effluents, addressing the critical need for resource efficiency and environmental sustainability in the face of climate change and resource depletion. Emphasizing the valorization of industrial by‐products, the study explores innovative, eco‐friendly recovery processes within a biorefinery framework to transform waste into valuable resources such as biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials. Through a systematic search in various bibliographic databases and a comprehensive literature review, the study critically analyzes existing studies, identifies research gaps, and offers new perspectives on the integration of biorefinery and circular economy principles. The findings reveal that strategic integration of biorefinery processes and circular economy principles can significantly reduce environmental footprints and foster sustainable industrial practices. Key challenges such as feedstock variability, technological barriers, and economic scalability are identified, along with recommendations for overcoming these obstacles through interdisciplinary collaboration, technological innovation, and supportive policy interventions. The main contribution of this research lies in its comprehensive approach, integrating cutting‐edge technologies and circular economy principles to offer viable strategies for sustainable bio‐based product recovery, thus significantly advancing the field of industrial sustainability. The article contributes to the advancement of sustainable technologies, policies, and strategies, advocating for a transition towards a more circular, resource‐efficient industrial sector. Continued innovation and research are emphasized to optimize recovery processes and explore new applications, supporting a sustainable and thriving future for our planet.
