Production of Biochar and Its Potential Application in Cementitious Composites

Abstract: In cement composites, usually, reinforcement is provided to restrict the crack development and their further propagation under service conditions. Typically, reinforcements utilized in cementitious composites range from nanometer scale to millimeter scale by using nano-, micro-, and millimeter-sized fibers and particles. These reinforcements provide the crack arresting mechanisms at the nano/microscale and restrict the growth of the cracks under service loads, but usually, the synthesis of nano/microfibers, an… Show more

“…Zhao et al, 2014). It has potential as a material for absorbing CO2 in cementbased applications, making it a low-cost and environmentally friendly option for the manufacture of highperformance cementitious composites (Akinyemi & Adesina, 2020;Khitab et al, 2021). In addition, adding biochar, which is generated from wood waste to concrete has been suggested to make buildings stronger and more water-resistant (Gupta & Kua, 2019).…”

“…Similarly, biocarbon in polymer composite materials [ 20 , 21 ] may add cost-effectiveness and environment friendliness to the materials. Thus, biocarbon can be utilized to tailor-make newer, lighter, and sustainable composite materials [ 22 , 23 ]. Biocarbon is the product obtained by removing the volatiles from the biomass during its thermal degradation process.…”

“…Pyrolysis is an energy-intensive method that involves the thermochemical breakdown of raw biomass in an inert atmosphere at high temperatures and pressures. This procedure yields different valuable products, like biochar, liquid bio-oil and fuel gases [1]. Biochar is a low-density dark-color carbon deposit.…”
