Production of bio‐based concrete water reducers from renewable resources: a review

Abstract: Concrete is a valuable construction material with high mechanical strength and durability, used extensively in the construction industry. It is produced by mixing sand, stones, cement, and water in different proportions depending on the desired quality of the final product. Water reducers are additional chemical ingredients used in concrete to reduce the quantity of water required in the concrete mixture. When added to concrete, water reducers increase the workability and flowability of concrete in the freshly… Show more

“…Lignin and its derivates are the most abundant biomass resource due to lignin’s impressive characteristics like its high abundance, high molecular weight, oxidation resistance, bacteriostasis, and biodegradability, and they have been widely used for water treatment [ 19 , 20 ], as adhesive-reinforcing agents [ 21 ], water reducers [ 22 , 23 ], and even in hydrogen production [ 24 ].…”

“…When added to cement slurry, it can dissociate into macromolecular anions and metal cations. Anions with negative charges adsorb on the surface of positively charged cement particles [5][6][7][8][9], which can generate a certain electrostatic repulsion and disperse the cement particles. As "low-carbon development" has gradually become a global consensus for economic development, which has led to heightened demands for environmentally friendly additives in terms of raw materials and production processes.…”
