Production of abrasive apricot kernel shell powder/boron nitride/polyester composites for cleaning of paint and corrosion on metal surfaces

Abstract: In this study, the synthesis and characterization of abrasive polyester composite discs reinforced with apricot kernel shell (AKS) particles and hexagonal boron nitride (BN) were carried out as an alternative to the methods used to remove the surface corrosion from metallic surfaces. Polyester composites were obtained by unsaturated polyester resin as a matrix and AKSs (1%, 3%, 5% and 10% weight ratio) with 200 mesh and 1% BN as reinforcements. Kernel shells as a source of cellulose were used for increasing me… Show more

“…Abrasive discs can be prepared from natural or synthetic materials, and they are usually prepared by attaching hard and abrasive materials to a binding matrix material. They are frequently produced from materials such as SiC, BC, BN, CeO, zirconia, aluminum oxide, iron oxide, silica and corundum [17][18][19][20][21][22]. However, today, studies on the preparation of abrasive discs from more sustainable, Apricot kernel shell is suitable filler for abrasive materials with its strong, hard structure and dense cellulose content.…”

“…[1,[6][7][8] These abrasive materials permit mechanizing the deburring or polishing operations and provide a treatment that is both very uniform and above all constant. [9] Erkan et al [10] have prepared a three-component composite material that can be used to remove unwanted layers from highly corrosive metallic materials. Indeed, polyester abrasive composite discs have been made using apricot kernel particles and hexagonal boron nitride as additives.…”

“…Such a wear mechanism is called “three‐body wear”. [ 10 ] Kenneth G. Budinski examined two and three‐body abrasion tests with alumina and silica abrasive on a range of materials to observe the early stages of abrasion. Optical microscopy of abrasive particles and counter‐face profilometry discover adhesive transfer of substance to abrasive particles.…”
