The Streptomyces genus is known to produce many specialized metabolites of value for medicine, but the potential of these metabolites in agronomy remains largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated three phylogenetically closely related Streptomyces strains (B5, B91, and B135) isolated from three distinct soil samples in Sudan. Despite belonging to the same species, these strains exhibited different ranges of Phytophthora infestans inhibition. The objective of this work was to identify the active compound(s) responsible for the inhibition of P. infestans and of other plant pathogens by comparing the genomes and metabolomes of the three strains which showed distinct activity patterns: B5 was the strongest inhibitor of oomycetes, B5 and B91 both inhibited most fungi and B135 was the only strain showing antibacterial activity. Our comparative genomic and metabolomic analysis identified borrelidin as the bioactive compound underlying B5's strong anti‐oomycete activity and highlighted a few other metabolites as putative candidates underlying the strains' antifungal and antibacterial activities. This study illustrates the power of comparative genomics and metabolomics on phylogenetically closely related strains of differing activities to highlight bioactive compounds that could contribute to new sustainable crop protection strategies.

The aim of this study is to establish the taxonomic position of the halotolerant bacterium ESM2-25 GTF strain isolated from the extreme environment of El-Mellah lagoon water, which is situated in the city of El-Kala in the northeast of Algeria and to study its phenotypic characteristics, antibacterial activity against several pathogenic bacteria, and hydrolytic enzymes production. The novel bacterium ESM2-25 GTF strain was isolated from water samples by the dilution agar plating method using the starch-casein medium, screened in vitro for its hydrolytic enzymes production and antibacterial activity. The phenotypic and molecular characteristics show that the strain ESM2-25 GTF belongs to the genus Streptomyces. However, the comparison of the morphological and physiological characteristics of the strain ESM2-25 GTF with those of the nearest species showed significant differences. This strain showed an antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis subsp. spizizenii CIP 106094, Escherichia coli ATCC 29522, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 and S. aureus MRSA ATCC 43300, while it is not active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853. Furthermore, the strain ECM2-25 GTF was able to produce different hydrolytic enzymes such as lipase, protease, amylase, catalase, and gelatinase, which have applications in the field of food and industry. The interesting antibacterial activity of the strain ESM2-25 GTF against pathogenic bacteria and hydrolytic enzymes production indicate the importance of the exploitation of marine actinomycetes for biotechnological applications and the discovery of new antibacterial molecules and could encourage further research on the bioactive molecules secreted by this strain.

Actinomycetes, most notably the genus Streptomyces, have great importance due to their role in the discovery of new natural products, especially for finding antimicrobial secondary metabolites that are useful in the medicinal science and biotechnology industries. In the current study, a genome-based evaluation of Streptomyces sp. isolate BR123 was analyzed to determine its biosynthetic potential, based on its in vitro antimicrobial activity against a broad range of microbial pathogens, including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi. A draft genome sequence of 8.15 Mb of Streptomyces sp. isolate BR123 was attained, containing a GC content of 72.63% and 8103 protein coding genes. Many antimicrobial, antiparasitic, and anticancerous compounds were detected by the presence of multiple biosynthetic gene clusters, which was predicted by in silico analysis. A novel metabolite with a molecular mass of 1271.7773 in positive ion mode was detected through a high-performance liquid chromatography linked with mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) analysis. In addition, another compound, meridamycin, was also identified through a HPLC-MS analysis. The current study reveals the biosynthetic potential of Streptomyces sp. isolate BR123, with respect to the synthesis of bioactive secondary metabolites through genomic and spectrometric analysis. Moreover, the comparative genome study compared the isolate BR123 with other Streptomyces strains, which may expand the knowledge concerning the mechanism involved in novel antimicrobial metabolite synthesis.
