Production of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural from Fructose Catalyzed by Sulfonated Bamboo-Derived Carbon Prepared by Simultaneous Carbonization and Sulfonation

Abstract: A novel sulfonated bamboo-derived carbon (SBC) was prepared through a one-pot simultaneous carbonization and sulfonation method using ptoluenesulfonic acid as the sulfonating agent. This method was used in place of the two-step method of high temperature carbonization followed by sulfonation, in order to reduce energy consumption and avoid the use of substantial amounts of strong liquid acid. The as-prepared catalyst bearing SO3H, COOH, and phenolic OH groups demonstrated efficient catalytic activity in the de… Show more

“…Over widespread applications of DMSO as a pure reaction medium for carbohydrate conversion, it has usually been applied as a component of solvents mixture. Some studies were focused on investigation of conversion of fructose in THF:DMSO mixtures in the presence of a catalyst such as bamboo-derived carbon (SBC) bearing SO 3 H, COOH, and phenolic OH groups, sulfonated carbonaceous material (GTS), P-VI-0 base, and P-SO 3 H-154 acid mixture, and Sn-Mont with yields of 50–95%.…”

“…Liu et al (2013) reported that using cellulose sulfuric acid as catalyst, 93.6% HMF yield was obtained in DMSO at 100 °C in 45 min. Shen et al (2016) prepared a novel sulfonated bamboo-derived carbon (SBC) and discovered that the catalytic performance in the dehydration of fructose to HMF was excellent, and HMF yield reached 92.1% in THF/DMSO reaction medium. Hu et al (2015) described a magnetic ligninderived carbonaceous solid catalyst for HMF production in DMSO, and as high as 81.1% HMF yield was achieved at 130 °C in 40 min.…”
