Production and some properties of Si3N4 reinforced aluminium alloy composites

Abstract: The present research work focuses on the production of aluminium (AA6082-T6) matrix composites reinforced with various weight percentage of silicon nitride particles by conventional stir casting route. The percentage of reinforcement is varied from 0 wt.% to 12 wt.% in a stage of 3%. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the fabricated aluminium matrix composites are investigated. The scanning electron microstructure images reveal the presence of Si 3 N 4 particles in the aluminium matrix. The distr… Show more

“…Among the various reinforcements titanium di -boride (TiB2) is of much interest due to its excellent stiffness, hardness and wear resistance. The Aluminium metal matrix composites are produced by liquid metallurgy route such as conventional stir casting and electromagnetic stir casting [7,8]. Squeeze casting [9,10].…”

“…Incorporating some strengthened materials like Nano aluminum oxide as well as Nano silicon carbide reduces the density of composites. The Archimedes principle that is dividing the mass of a specimen by the quantity displaced by that sample in the water beaker is to calculate density [9,10]. Porosities determine the difference between theoretical density and experimental density.…”

“…Si 3 N 4 is a low density (3.1 g/cm 3 ) ceramic material with high mechanical strength and hardness, good thermal and chemical stability, and good wear and corrosion resistance. It is of current interest as reinforcement in the manufacturing of MMCs [19][20][21][22]. Several works have been reported on fabrication and mechanical characterisation of aluminium matrix composite reinforced with Si 3 N 4 particles.…”
