Product safety and security in the global supply chain: Issues, challenges and research opportunities

Abstract: A number of high profile product safety events and recalls have heightened public attention to the safety and security of the products that people consume and use. While product safety isn’t a new topic, the effect of the global supply chain in creating or exacerbating safety risks and vulnerabilities is both timely and relevant. In this essay we focus on how the field of operations management can provide fresh perspectives and insights in addressing the challenges of product safety and security in the global … Show more

“…However, most design engineers do not receive formal training in safety methodologies (such as FTA and FMEA) common to the safety community, and many product safety tools are not systematically implemented by the design community (Main & Frantz, 1994;Main & McMurphy, 1998). Safety management tools and DFS are considered important, but the effectiveness of hazard analysis is still unclear (Marucheck et al, 2011).…”

“…The technologies used to increase the storage time and to ensure the safe consumption of highly perishable products, such as meat, have undergone a continuous evolution over the time [13][14][15]. Besides, the difusion of active packaging, systems capable of interacting dynamically with the food and/or with the atmosphere in order to save the healthiness of the product and to extend its shelf life, is increasing [16].…”

“…External aspects were identified by comparing the existing processes to the current national regulation and international best practices as described in [9]. Based on this information, opportunities for improvement were defined as possible actions to be carried out based on compliance of certain aspects denoting the possibility to increase the capacity to meet the requirements or improve the performance of the RSRAT alert response process.…”
