Product-Oriented Sensitivity Analysis for Multistation Compliant Assemblies

Abstract: Dimensional variation in assembled products directly affects product performance. To reduce dimensional variation, it is necessary that an assembly be robust. A robust assembly is less sensitive to input variation from the product and process components, such as incoming parts, subassemblies, fixtures, and welding guns. In order to effectively understand the sensitivity of an assembly to input variation, an appropriate set of metrics must be defined. In this paper, three product-oriented indices, including pat… Show more

“…Tolerance analysis refers to the process of calculating the tolerance range. Such analyses have long dealt with the assembly of rigid bodies; but recently, the effects of compliant assemblies are also being researched [2][3][4][5]. The compliant nature of the steel plates used in When there is geometrical variation in the parts to be welded, the parts are clamped to their nominal positions.…”

“…Liu and Hu [11] developed the method of influence coefficients (MIC) to establish the linear relationship between the variations of individual parts and assembly, under the assumption of linear elastic deformation. Camelio et al [12] and Yue et al [13] used a state space representation to extend the MIC in multi-station assembly system. Dahlstrom and Lindkvist [14], Xie et al [15], and Lindau et al [16] incorporated the contact effect of parts into assembly variation modeling.…”

“…Constructing response surfaces by design of experiments also becomes expensive for highdimensional problems. GSA [9,10] considers the entire possible ranges of parameter variations and can be conducted in several ways, such as scatter plots [11,12], screening [13], regression analysis [14], variance-based methods [15][16][17][18], probabilistic SA [4,19], and local variation approximation [4,20]. Most of them are statistical methods, which use probabilistic information of design variables and design parameters.…”
