Producer Mobility support in Named Data Internet of Things Network

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is being realized as a promising approach to accomplish the shortcomings of current IP-address based networking. ICN models are based on naming the content to get rid of address-space scarcity, accessing the content via name-based-routing, caching the content at intermediate nodes to provide reliable, efficient data delivery and self-certifying contents to ensure better security. Obvious benefits of ICN in terms of fast and efficient data delivery and improved reliability raises ICN as highly promising networking model for Internet of Things (IoTs) like environments. IoT aims to connect anyone and/or anything at any time by any path on any place. From last decade, IoTs attracts both industry and research communities. IoTs is an emerging research field and still in its infancy. Thus, this paper presents the potential of ICN for IoTs by providing state-of-the-art literature survey. We discuss briefly the feasibility of ICN features and their models (and architectures) in the context of IoT. Subsequently, we present a comprehensive survey on ICN based caching, naming, security and mobility approaches for IoTs with appropriate classification. Furthermore, we present operating systems (OS) and simulation tools for ICN-IoT. Finally, we provide important research challenges and issues faced by ICN for IoTs.

Named Data Networking (NDN) is a clean-slate future Internet architecture proposed to support content mobility. However, content producer mobility is not supported fundamentally and faces many challenges such as, high handoff latency, signaling overhead cost and unnecessary Interest packet losses. Hence, many approaches indirection-based approach, mapping-based approach, locator-based approach and control/data plane-based approach were proposed to address these problems. Mapping-based and control/data plane-based approach deployed servers for name resolution serveces to provide optimal data path after handoff, but introduces high handoff latency and signalling overhead cost. Indirection-based and locator-based approach schemes provide normal handoff delay, but introduces sub-optimal or tiangular routing path. Therefore, there is needs to provide substantial producer mobility support that minimizes the handoff latency, signaling cost and improve data packets delivery via optimal path once a content producer relocates to new location. This paper proposed a scheme that provides optimal data path using mobility Interest packets and broadcasting strategy. Analytical investigation result shows that our proposed scheme outperforms existing approaches in terms of handoff latency, signaling cost and path optimization.

Efficient Pooling and Collaborative Cache Management for NDN/IoT Networks

Named Data Networking (NDN) has been recognized as a lever to the Internet of Things (IoT). One of the most founding features of NDN is in-network caching to improve data availability and reduce retrieval delays and network load. Despite the existence of several caching decision algorithms, the fetching and distribution of contents with minimum resource utilization remains a great challenge. In this paper, we propose an efficient caching technique named PoolCache that augments the effective caching capacity of some defined conglomerates of nodes. This is accomplished by pooling the various caches and manage them in a way to insure zero content redundancy within any defined node conglomerate. The resulting high diversity of cached contents throughout the network tacitly amounts to much better overall performances. We conducted extensive simulations using the CCNsim simulator to evaluate the performance of PoolCache and compare it to that of some well known caching strategies. Simulations using a large Transit Stub topology show that PoolCache clearly outperforms the other caching strategies in terms of a much greater content diversity and consequently a limited number of content evictions, a much better cache hit ratio, and a much lower content retrieval delay. Simulations also showed that PoolCache benefits from any eventual content popularity.
