Vanadium compounds are characterised by a broad spectrum of action in vivo and in vitro. Their insulin-mimetic activity is manifested in their ability to normalize changes observed in both clinical and experimental diabetes (i.e. hyperglycaemia, hyperlipidaemia, lowered cell sensitivity to insulin) through the regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and the removal of secondary symptoms of this disease (as e.g. retinopathy, cardiomyopathy, nephropathy). Nevertheless, vanadium is considered to be a toxic element in both cationic and anionic form, although the latter type has more serious side effects. This is accounted for by the faster absorption of anionic forms, although the chemical structure, geometry, and the manner of synthesis of its derivatives also contributes to this elevated toxicity. Besides their antidiabetic properties, vanadium derivatives have also been observed to influence processes related to mitogenic cell responses (apoptosis, proliferation, neoplastic transformation). However, both anti-and pro-neoplastic properties of vanadium are reported.

Electrolytic reduction of V3S4 in molten CaCl2

Metallic vanadium was successfully produced starting from vanadium sul de by applying electrolysis in molten CaCl 2 . Vanadium sul de lled in a cathodic Ti basket and a graphite anode were immersed in the melt of CaCl 2 -CaS at 1173 K in Ar, and the electrolysis was conducted at a cell voltage of 3.0 V. Sul de electrolysis did not form carbon deposit and was free from carbon contamination, while carbon powder was formed on the cathode in the oxide electrolysis using the melt of CaCl 2 -CaO. When the CaS content in the molten CaCl 2 increased, electrolysis current increased resulting in fast smelting while the oxygen and sulfur contents in metallic vanadium increased. Oxygen and sulfur contents as low as 3390 ppm and 210 ppm, respectively, were achieved by supplying about four times more electrical charge than stoichiometry.

Abstract-The recovery of vanadium with calcium fluoride in sulfuric acid medium was put forward from vanadium titanomagnetite in order to enhance the leaching efficiency of vanadium and reduce the environmental pollution. The main factors, leaching mechanism and kinetics analysis of vanadium from vanadium titano-magnetite concentrate were deeply investigated. The results show that the calcium fluoride could obviously increase the recovery of vanadium and enhance leaching efficiency. The recovery of vanadium was increased from 75% to 92% with 6% calcium fluoride. The calcium fluoride could promote the dissolution of SiO2 and the generation of H2SiF6, which may easily destroy the crystal lattice of magnetite and dissolve the vanadium. The particles of vanadium titano-magnetite were smaller and multihole with calcium fluoride after the acid leaching process. The leaching kinetics could be expressed by the SCM in the process. The apparent rate constant was increased from 0.0017 to 0.0031 with 6% calcium fluoride at 100 o C, where the apparent activation energy (Ea) of vanadium leaching has been decreased from 36.05 KJ/mol to 22.17 KJ/mol.
