The present study evaluated the use of epoxidized esters of succinic acid, oleic acid, and propylene glycol as a bioplasticizer for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and compared the results with the commercial phthalate plasticizer di(2‐ethylhexyl)phthalate. The chemical properties, structure, and biodegradation of the obtained bioplasticizer were analyzed. In order to analyze the influence of different PVC processing conditions on the properties of the obtained samples, the gelation process was carried out at 170, 180, 190, and 200°C at a time of 1.5–10.0 min. Mechanical properties, thermal characteristics, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, plasticizer migration, and color change were determined for the resulting plasticized PVC samples. The performed studies allowed to confirm the obtaining of a biodegradable bioplasticizer (after 28 days, the decomposition rate in respirometry test was 72.7%). The optimal conditions for PVC processing were determined. For them the properties of the obtained material were superior. Processing PVC at 170°C for 7.5 min proved to be the most optimal conditions for the bioplasticizer synthesized in this study. Under these conditions, tensile strength of about 23 MPa and elongation at break of 200% were obtained, while plasticizer migration was very low (4.4% after 7 days and 6.8% after 28 days).

Nanofiber membranes are extensively used in ultra- and micro-filtration purposes due to their high surface-to-volume ratio. However, nanofiber membranes do not have adequate strength to withstand forces acting on the filter surface, especially when using very low porosity membranes. In this study, PVC nanofiber mats and nanofiber composite membranes were fabricated through electrospinning and solvent casting technology. The membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), porosimetry, and tensile strength tests. Analysis indicated that electrospun mats contain varying pore sizes (nano to micro) whose frequencies within the mat vary with fiber diameter. It was also established that mats fabricated from low solution concentration contain the largest percentage of pores. The mats’ tensile strength varied with fiber packing density, fiber assembly, and the density of fiber-to-fiber contact points. The tensile properties of the nanofiber composite membranes were found to be between those of the constituents and changed with change in the nanofiber layer thickness. The fabricated nanofiber composite membranes are intended for use in applications such as air ultra-filtration, acoustic filtration etc. The high porosity and small mesh pore size of electrospun nanofiber mats allow for removal of ultra-fine particles or microbes from contaminated air, water or other media.

Evolution of the complex viscosity of pastes of PVC‐VA (vinyl chloride‐vinyl acetate copolymer) plasticized with different commercial plasticizers has been studied. Knowledge of the rheological behavior of the formulations allows for better understanding of the gelation and fusion processes. Twenty commercial plasticizers of different types and with different functional groups have been studied and are grouped into five families: phthalate esters with linear chains, phthalate esters with branched chains, adipates (normal and polymeric), citrates, and rest of the plasticizers (carboxylates, alkylsulfonates, and pentaerythritol ester derivatives). Interesting relationships among the observed rheologies and the nature and molecular weight of the plasticizer have been observed. The evolution of the complex viscosity with temperature—at the temperatures where the blowing agents normally used in PVC plastisol foaming processes generate the main amount of gas—has been newly discussed with regard to the chemical structure and molecular weight of all of the plasticizers used. It was found that several different dynamic processes must be synchronized in order to understand the relationships among the chemical structure, plasticization, plasticizer compatibility, rheological properties, and foaming process of such materials.
