Since last two decades, technology has changed rapidly in each industry from consumer goods to aerospace. To quench the thrust of technology advancement of industries, the research community has to develop the novel materials. As a part of the ongoing process of material development and machinability study, present work was carried out to find out the effect of various cutting parameters on surface roughness and machining time of aluminium Hybrid Metal Matrix Composites (AHMMCs). In this study, pure aluminium was used as a matrix material while; B4C, Mg, Ti and Graphite were used as reinforcement. It was observed that 2202 RPM spindle speed, 0.18 mm/rev feed rate and 1.1 mm depth of cut are the optimum turning parameters with PCD insert. While machining of same composites using carbide insert, optimum spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut are 2091 RPM, 0.19 mm/rev and 1.1 mm respectively. Moreover, PCD insert provides better surface finish compared to carbide coated insert for same cutting conditions. Moreover, the effect of reinforcement particles presence on the surface finish was also investigated and it was concluded that reinforcement presence reduces the surface roughness considerably. Particularly presence of Mg and graphite reduces surface finish significantly.

The present work aims in understanding the mechanical properties and strengthening behavior of Al 6061 based particulate hybrid aluminium matrix composites (PHAMCs) reinforced with rice husk ash (RHA) and TiC particles (sizes; 10 µm) fabricated by liquid metallurgical route. RHA + TiC particles (3 wt%, 5 wt%, 7 wt%, and 9 wt%) are added in equal proposition in the hybrid composite which is fabricated through stir-casting technique. Samples are named as S1, S2, S3, S4 based on the proposition of RHA and TiC, whereas Al 6061 alloy is casted and named as S0. Fabricated composites were homogenized at 400 °C for 1 h and then aged to 115 °C for 24 h. X-ray diffraction result confirms the presence of principle elements like Al, TiC, Si and oxygen without the formation of any intermetallic elements. Property of PHAMCs such as ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and micro Vickers hardness had improved by 31%, 17.1%, and 18%, respectively with increase in the percentage of reinforcement. Addition of reinforcement slightly lowers the mechanical properties of PHAMCs which is due to agglomerations and porosity. Reinforcement with more than 7% of RHA and TiC in matrix significantly effect the density, impact energy and percentage of elongation to a maximum of 3.88%, 28.52%, and 29.91%, respectively. Microstructure of the fractured surfaces are analysed through SEM and it is reported.

Abstract: Composite are one of the necessity of the current industrial infrastructure because of change in day to day requirements of the consumers. One of the most useful composite in aeronautical and automobile industries are aluminum ceramic composites because of their improved mechanical and thermal properties. However, amount of reinforcement has significant effect the properties of the composites material. Therefore, it is necessary to find out optimum amount of reinforcement that has the significant effect on the particular property of the composite material. Therefore, in the current study, Al-SiC (Aluminum-Silicon Carbide) metal matrix composite was fabricated using stir casting method. Parameters like stirring speed and temperature were kept constant during the process. Sic particle of 200 mesh size was used in different proportions. The reinforcement amount was varied from 0 to 12.5%. The influence of the percentage variation of the composite was studied based on the hardness test, microstructure analysis, optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) and SEM-EDX. The OES, microstructure analysis and SEM-EDX analysis show retention of SiC in pure aluminium. The SEM-EDX of composite with 7.5% SiC addition shows 5.94% SiC retention that suggests the 79 % efficiency of the process. Moreover, it was observed from the hardness analysis that increases in the percentage of SiC increases hardness. Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) and EDS show the inclusion of iron [Fe] from stirrer blade material in results.Microstructure study shows the presence of SiC particles. EDX analysis of 7.5% SiC shows 5.94% retention of Si which again shows good retention rate.
