High density polyethylene (rHDPE) is extruded 1 to 8 times, with and without detergent, to simulate the effects of impurities on the material and on the artificial ageing process. The mechanical properties, thermal stability, rheology, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions are measured. According to the results, ageing of rHDPE increases tensile strength, reduces elongation, and enhances side chain branching of the material and thus causes rheological changes. The addition of detergent reduces changes in mechanical properties and rheological behavior but accelerates thermal degradation. VOC and FTIR measurements of the samples with detergent addition show generation of harmful 1,4‐dioxane. The amount of total emission, as well as emissions of important perfumes limonene and 1R‐α‐pinene, decreases during multiple extrusion cycles. Heating of the plastics is found to be a major factor in the VOC emission reduction. Impurities have a notable effect on the artificial ageing results. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. After Hermann Staudinger laid the foundations of polymer science 100 years ago, an extraordinary scientific, technological, and industrial saga has been written by a long list of academic and industrial scientists. As a result, polymers are present in practically all sectors of human activity, transforming human societies in terms of quality of life, safety, hygiene, etc. Yet the expansion in the production and use of polymeric materials comes at a price for the environment because the polymer economy has been organized since its inception under the “ take, make, dispose ” pattern. Such a linear organization of the polymer economy causes considerable damages to the environment, wastes resources, and harms wildlife. This article discusses the steps that need to be taken worldwide to turn a still linear polymer economy into a circular one. Questions such as the sorting of polymer waste, their mechanical recycling, their recycling through nonchemical processes, the depolymerization of some polymers into monomers, the pyrolysis of nondegradable polymers, the potential of biodegradation processes are critically reviewed. Recommendations are made in this article to dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of the whole production chain from monomer synthesis to the manufacture of polymers and build a truly circular polymer economy with reuse, repair, and recycle as its foundations.

Transparent High‐Performance Supramolecular Plastics Operating in All‐Weather Environments

Supramolecular plastics (SMPs) can be made mechanically robust, repairable, and recyclable, rendering themselves promising alternatives to their conventional predecessors to address environmental concerns. However, dense accumulations of noncovalent bonds generally lead to mechanical brittleness as well as intolerance toward heat and moisture. To resolve this issue, a simple strategy of preparing high-performance SMP by constructing highly dense, but irregular hydrogen-bond networks with hierarchical structures is proposed. The resultant SMP exhibits an outstanding combination of good comprehensive mechanical properties (high stiffness, strength, and toughness with ductile failure when fracturing), excellent dynamic behaviors (repairability and recyclability), and high tolerances toward moisture and high temperatures (as high as 90 °C). Additionally, the SMP also shows a high dielectric constant, exhibiting great potential for applications such as healable flexible touch screens and energy storage. Last, through structure characterizations and molecular dynamic simulation, this study provides a fundamental insight into the mechanism behind such high-performances from nano-to micro-scales, which is expected to inspire the design of a wide range of other SMPs that use different chemistries.
