Preface This review highlights how we can build upon the relatively new and rapidly developing field of bacterial communication or quorum sensing (QS). We now have a depth of knowledge about how bacteria use QS signals to communicate with each other and coordinate activities. There have been extraordinary advances in QS genetics, genomics, biochemistry, and diversity of signaling systems. We are beginning to understand the connections between QS and bacterial sociality. This foundation places us at the precipice of a new era where researchers can advance towards development of new medicines to treat devastating infectious diseases, and in parallel use bacteria to understand the biology of sociality.

Plant diseases are a major challenge in crop production. They are caused by nematodes, bacteria, fungi, viruses as well as plant nutritional factors. Diseases interfere with the normal physiological and metabolic processes of plants. This results in various effects including wilting, stunting, yellowing and death of plant tissues and organs. Crop losses due to diseases manifest in form of reduced yield, poor quality produce, and reduced post-harvest storage. Past research has brought to the limelight the continuous capacity of pathogens to revert to new pathotypes and strains, some that break resistant varieties or are less sensitive to chemical control products. Currently, farmers are advised to combine several plant disease management practices, a strategy known as integrated plant disease management. Such strategies include crop rotation, use of disease free planting materials, field sanitation, and chemical methods as well as use of resistant varieties. However, some of these methods are expensive and substantially increase the cost of production. Development in molecular biology and biotechnology found application in plant disease management. This ranges from identification, diagnosis to control through gene transfer, mutation breeding and RNA interference, among others. In this paper, the current developments in the application of molecular techniques and biotechnology to manage plant diseases, outlining their possible future application and potential for enhanced plant disease management.

Membrane fouling is one of the most investigated topics in the field of membrane processes because it is the main weakness that prevents membrane bioreactors (MBRs) from being widely applied. With a view to reducing membrane fouling, all the phenomena involved in the operation are worth understanding through a fine-tuned and deep examination. In the present paper, the study focused on the hydrodynamics in an airlift MBR with a flat sheet membrane, taking into account the application of a specific method for biofouling mitigation adding free moving particles in addition of bubbles injection. The application of this technique creates a complex three-phase gas-liquid-solid contactor in the MBR in terms of hydrodynamics. Therefore, the main objective of this work was to properly characterize, using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique, such a system in order to clarify the potential effect of the addition of free moving solid particle on the hydrodynamics and the performances of the MBR. Three different shape of particle have been tested: beads, hollow cylinders and flat sheets. Local hydrodynamic parameters, such as the liquid velocity, the liquid shear stress, or the bubble sizes and velocities were analyzed with and without the presence of solid particles. Specific conclusions are drawn to help future user of this antifouling technique to optimize the design for the solid particle.
