The extracts of Spondias mombin leaves were obtained to study the influence of drug amount and ethanol proportion on extract performance. The optimized extract was dried by spray drying, and the contributions were studied by Box-Behnken design to evaluate their influence on drying yield and product properties. The factorial data indicated the importance of both factors to the responses and the optimal conditions employing 10 g of herbal drug, and 80% ethanol was possible to recovery high amount of total polyphenols content (20.47 ± 0.08 g%), suitable dry residue (2.56 ± 0.04 g%), and great extraction efficient (8.10 ± 0.16%). Regarding the study of the drying process, the colloidal silicon dioxide provides spherical and larger particles with medium size 3.44 µm and moisture content equal to 4.15 ± 0.08% resulting in an increase in the physical characteristics of the dry products, such as yield (49.57%), CI (29.9%), and HR (1.43). Overall, the drying conditions (inlet temperature: 140°C and feed flow: 0.6 L/hr) provide lower hygroscopic powders, with yield of 44.66 ± 0.32% and moisture content 3.80 ± 0.06%. It was possible with the use of Box-Behnken design followed by response surface methodology that allowed the achievement of the optimum conditions for drying the standardized extract from leaves of S. mombin, to obtain powder beds with good flow and conservation of their phytochemicals. Practical applicationsConsidering the industrial production of vegetable inputs with antioxidant properties as an activity of high economic and social impact and conditioning the growth of this industrial segment to a vision of sustainable local development, it is essential that initiatives that promote the cultivation and processing of active vegetable inputs be encouraged as well as those that support the technological development of products with greater stability and easy handling. Spondias mombin appears as a species with high potential, as the species has a relevant participation in the rural economy through fruit production, the commercialization, and processing of its fruits.However, its leaves have bioactive compounds with important antioxidant activity, constituting a promising source for obtaining the substances involved in this activity, such as polyphenols. The excessive synthesis of interleukin-6 (IL-6) is related to cytokine storm in COVID-19 patients. Moreover, blocking IL-6 has been suggested as a treatment strategy for inflammatory diseases such as sepsis. Sepsis is a severe systemic inflammatory response syndrome with high mortality. In the present study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory and anti-septic effects and the underlying mechanisms of Dracocephalum moldavica ethanol extract (DMEE) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory stimulation in RAW 264.7 macrophages along with septic mouse models. We found that DMEE suppressed the release of inflammatory mediators NO and PGE2 and inhibited both the mRNA and protein expression levels of iNOS and COX-2, respectively. In addition, DMEE reduced the release of proinflammatory cytokines, mainly IL-6 and IL-1β, in RAW 264.7 cells by inhibiting the phosphorylation of JNK, ERK and p65. Furthermore, treatment with DMEE increased the survival rate and decreased the level of IL-6 in plasma in LPS-induced septic shock mice. Our findings suggest that DMEE elicits an anti-inflammatory effect in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages and an anti-septic effect on septic mouse model through the inhibition of the ERK/JNK/NF-κB signaling cascades and production of IL-6.

In recent years, the research in the field of medicinal plants as therapeutic supplements has increased significantly. Lavender extract is widely used among medicinal plant products due to its unique therapeutic properties. Since drying processes require high energy, this study was conducted to study the performance of the spray dryer in the production of lavender extract powder at three levels of air temperature 150°C, 180°C, and 210°C, three levels of compressed air flow rate 6, 8, and 10 L/min and ratios of maltodextrin‐drying aid to the mass of dry matter of the extract 0%, 25%, and 50% by response surface method. For this purpose, the energy efficiency and exergy of the powder production process were examined. According to the obtained results, increasing the inlet air temperature and the inlet air flow rate increased the energy efficiency and exergy and decreased the energy efficiency and exergy, respectively. The energy efficiency of the drying process varied in the range of 6.55%–15.87%, and the exergy efficiency () of the drying process in the range of 2.87%–5.84%. Also, the of the spray dryer was calculated in the range of 20.05%–38.78%. Based on the energy efficiency and exergy, the optimal production of lavender plant extract powder was obtained at the air temperature of 210°C, the compressed air flow rate of 6 L/min, and the amount of drying aid of 11.9 g/L.
