Process improvement studies for the Submerged Demineralizer System (SDS) at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Station, Unit 2

Abstract: Attachment 1 provides justification, as required in 10 CFR 73.5, that the exemption would not endanger life or property or the common defense and security, and is otherwise in the public interest. The changes proposed in this exemption are not required to address an immediate safety or security concern, but rather are being submitted in response to the referenced NRC letter requesting FirstEnergy Corp. to evaluate the applicability of the current 10.CFR 73.55 to TMI Unit 2.

“…Deionizers based on columns of zeolite, silica gel, and ion exchange resins were evaluated for the removal 13'Cs, ?3r, and '=Sb fiom contaminated water at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Station Unit No. 2 [25]. As previously discussed, ion exchange columns require chemical regeneration and thereby produce large volumes of radioactive secondary waste.…”
