Process Evaluation in the Community Intervention Trial for Smoking Cessation (COMMIT)

Abstract: The reach and complexity of the multi-site Community Intervention Trial for Smoking Cessation (COMMIT) project call for an extensive, comprehensive evaluation plan. This article reports on the objectives, methods, and data sets of the part of the plan designed for process evaluation. We describe the systems developed for: monitoring progress in the sites, the quality of local intervention activities and data collection, and compliance with the trial-wide protocol; disseminating information for formative purpos… Show more

“…Recent trials have included rigorous assessments of the implementation of interventions through process tracking systems measuring such indicators as dose, or the amount of intervention delivered; fidelity, or the extent to which the intervention was delivered as planned; and program coverage, including participation (44,130,131,177). These data provide important information that enhances the ability to interpret outcome assessments, identify competing explanations for observed effects, and measure exposure to the intervention.…”

“…Although many studies designed to assess interventions to alter health behavior, policies, or the environment have recognized the importance of collecting process data (Ramirez et al 1995;Flora et al 1993;Corbett et al 1991;LeFebvre et al 1987;Taggart et al 1990;Botvin et al 1995), most have used the findings to describe implementation and reach of the program efforts (Ramirez et al 1995;Flora et al 1993;LeFebvre et al 1987). Process data are less frequently tied to study outcomes.…”

“…In smoking cessation, for example, researchers may count whether cessation materials were received and read by individuals; in dietary change, they may assess availability of fruits and vegetables in the home; in physical activity, they may assess access to safe walking areas. This type of evaluation has not been well applied to community studies, although some studies of cardiovascular disease prevention, among others, have included elements designed to capture the processes of intervention in their evaluation plans (27,38,47,75,102).…”
