Process Economic Evaluation of Resource Valorization of Seawater Concentrate by Membrane Technology

Abstract: In this study, a process design consisting of chemical precipitation, electrodialysis with monovalent-selective membranes, and bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) is proposed to valorize seawater concentrate discharged from an RO (reverse osmosis) plant for the production of acid/base and coarse salt with high purity. After pre-precipitation and electrodialysis with monovalent-selective membranes, a high purity of coarse salt (∼92%) was obtained. Furthermore, the effect of current density and feed concentr… Show more

“…BPM can generally be formed as a single layer (film) BPM or multilayer materials. ,,,, Single-layer BPM is prepared by a subsequent introduction of anionic and cationic functionalities to each side of the preselected base material. However, most of the existing BPMs are multilayered structures that are prepared from commercial or tailor-made IEMs.…”

“…While the former technique is suitable for small-scale batch-type processes, the latter are widely used in industries, owing to screening large dispersion batches for quality and performance, high production rates in continuous processes, and potentially good control of the physicochemical properties of the resulting membranes. As shown in Table S1, most of the outer layers of the BPM (AEMs and CEMs) are prepared by solution casting. ,, Unlike simple lamination and hot-pressing, BPM preparation by casting the ionomer layer or the interfacial polymer layer is expected to ensure good adhesion between the BPM components.…”

“…Other SED-based approaches were studied to generate acid and base using wastewaters from chemical or desalination plants which could then be resupplied in commodity chemicals. SED-EDBM processes reached a current efficiency of 70% and 1.75 kWh/kg NaOH in terms of energy consumption [ 316 ]. The monovalent-enriched and divalent enriched streams produced by SED led to HCl and H 2 SO 4 , respectively, after EDBM.…”

“…Electrodialysis is a method of desalination, concentration, and fractionation of solutions based on the selective transport of ions through charged membranes under the action of an external electric field [1]. Electrodialysis with ion exchange membranes is traditionally used in water treatment [2], production of acids and bases [3,4], recycling of technological solutions [5], correction of food composition [6,7], and table salt production [8]. In the simplest case, electrodialysis purification means the removal of any ions, i.e., a decrease in the total salinity [1].…”
