Process Development in Biotechnology - A Re-Evaluation

Abstract: This review considers some process development problems in biotechnology and presents examples of solutions, which were developed in cooperation with industrial partners. These processes include the production of restriction endonuclease EcoRI by recombinant Escherichia coli, which is toxic to the cell, penicillin V by Penicillium chrysogenum, xylanase by Aspergillus awamori, cephalosporin C by Acremonium chrysogenum, erythritol by Moniliella tomentosa var pollinis, and alkaline serine protease by Bacillus lic… Show more

“…Because of their special properties like high diffusivity, low viscosity, nearly zero surface tension, strong solvent power for some small molecules, etc., they have been efficaciously used for many applications. [104][105][106][107][108][109] Due to these properties SFC's produce small and regular sized particles, faster than liquid medium. Recently, applications of SCFs in material science have attracted much interest, because they serve as carriers to distribute and/or impregnate precursors into porous substrates for the preparation of composites and/or template synthesis of functional materials with special structures.…”

“…Supercritical fluids (SCFs), due to their special properties including low viscosity, high diffusivity, near zero surface tension, strong solvent power for some small molecules, etc, have been successfully used in many fields. [13][14][15][16][17][18] Recently, the applications of SCFs in material science have attracted much interest, and SCFs have been demonstrated to be excellent solvents and carriers to distribute and/or impregnate precursors into porous substrates for preparation of composites and/or template synthesis of functional materials with special structures. [19][20][21][22][23][24] In this paper, an effective route was developed to prepare TiO 2 -MMT composites.…”

“…The results showed that the specific adsorption recovery of penicillin G at the ratio of 32:13:1 was 66%, while those at 63:8:1, 63:4:1 and 32:8:1 were 55%, 52% and 62% respectively. The results showed that the separation efficiency of penicillin G by water-compatible molecularly imprinted polymers under the optimal conditions was better than the traditional liquid-liquid extraction [41]. Moreover, the lower dosage of methanol (about 3.0 mL) and high selectivity are other advantages of this separation technique.…”
