Process assessment, integration and optimisation: The path towards cleaner production

Abstract: This contribution starts from the broad perspective of the global material cycles, analysing the main resource and pollution issues world-wide from the viewpoint of the disturbances to these cycles caused by human activities. The issues are analysed in the light of the currently developing COVID-19 pandemic with the resulting behavioural and business pattern changes. “…Later, scholars such as Rennings and Zwick ( 2002 ) incorporated sustainable development into their definition of green technology innovation and diversified its connotation. As green development evolves, scholars have classified green technologies in terms of cleaner production, pollution control, and environmental protection (Arslan et al 2022 ; Demirel and Kesidou 2011 ; Varbanov et al 2021 ), broadened their connotation and scope of application, and developed them to micro-enterprise level research, arguing that enterprises are subject to green technological innovation development and are the starting point for technology diffusion (Lu et al 2022 ). Second, research on green technology innovation assessment.…”

“…Research on a circular economy deals with how to improve the quality of the environment and human life through a more efficient industry. Varbanov et al ( 2021 ) discussed the benefits of recycling, reuse, energy-saving, and waste prevention, while Fan et al ( 2020 ) sought to propose improvements to current WM systems, focusing on recycling and WtE. Samson ( 2020 ) mentioned that the supply chain should be prepared for a big shock, be it a pandemic or natural catastrophe.…”

“…The main focus is the designing phases of MCP's which done effectively can significantly reduce difficulties related to reuse, recycle and disposal. Varbanov, Jia, and Lim (2021) proposed 4 main processes for handling EoL MCP's:…”

“…The enabling condition for these 4 processes to flourish (except the landfill process) is logistics as Varbanov et al (2021) suggest. Logistics are related to the transportation of MCP's between various supply chain "actors" such as manufacturer, repairer, user, etc.…”
