RESUMOObjetivo: Identificar como os simuladores estão sendo usados para ensino, treinamento, terapia e exames na medicina, com destaque para oftalmologia. A realidade virtual surgiu como uma ferramenta auxiliar no ensino e treinamento médico. Na oftalmologia, o progresso dessa técnica tem sido publicado em algumas revistas de saúde. Baseado nessas fontes, investigamos como a Oftalmologia tem interagido com a Realidade Virtual, essa ferramenta que veio para auxiliar o ensino da Medicina. Métodos: Revisão sistemática de artigos das principais revistas, além de livros sobre o assunto entre 1995 e 2010. Revisamos a literatura publicada dos últimos quinze anos baseados em referências mencionadas em várias revistas, como exemplo podemos citar a Medical Education, Journal of the American College of Surgeon, Computers & Graphics, New England Journal of Medicine, Proceedingof the IEEE no período de 1990 a 2010. Resultados: Após a revisão de 200 artigos encontrados sobre o tema educação médica e realidade virtual publicados em revistas nacionais e internacionais entre os anos de 1995 e 2010, percebemos as diferenças entre as áreas da medicina, no que se refere ao uso da realidade virtual (RV). Apenas 10 artigos explicitam com algum aprofundamento os simuladores oftalmológicos. Conclusão: A oftalmologia é uma das áreas que menos interagem com a realidade virtual, devido a dificuldades de montagem de imagens para serem aplicadas no simulador. Mas é uma das áreas que mais precisa, devido à delicadeza da estrutura de trabalho, olho humano. Assim, a Realidade Virtual (RV) tem aparecido na otoscopia virtual e na formação dos atlas virtuais. Na cirurgia, os simuladores ainda são poucos, mas provavelmente será a área mais promissora, devido as vantagens do treinamento virtual. Assim, a RV tem surgido junto aos serious games, ensino e treinamento de oftalmologia, além de terapia de fobias.Descritores: Simulação por computador; Educação médica/métodos; Modelos educacionais; Interface usuá-rio, computador; Educação baseada em competências ABSTRACT Objective: To identify how the simulators are being used for education, training, therapy and tests in medicine, particularly ophthalmology. Virtual reality has emerged as an auxiliary tool in education and medical training. In ophthalmology, the progress of this technique has been published in some health magazines. Based on these sources, we investigated the ophthalmology have interacted with virtual reality, this tool that came to support the teaching of medicine. Methods: A systematic review of articles in leading journals on the subject between 1995 and 2010 as well as books on the subject. Results: After reviewing 200 articles on medical education and virtual reality published in national and international journals between 1995 and 2010 we see the differences between the areas of medicine with regard to the use of VR. Developing haptic caries simulation for dental education

Background: Treating tooth decay (caries), an essential skill for dental students to learn, relies largely on tactile investigation. Most dental schools use plastic or extracted teeth to teach caries removal and cavity design. However, plastic teeth cannot replicate the 'feel' of caries, limiting the available practice exercises to manual dexterity rather than cavity design guided by pathology. Virtual haptic simulation is emerging as a viable adjunct to traditional methods, with potential to simulate dental tissues and pathology. Aim: To develop virtual haptic caries simulations, enabling students to practice the tactile and cognitive aspects of caries removal and cavity design in a controlled environment on the Moog Simodont Dental Trainer. Methods: Custom software was written to enable the creation of blocks containing unique variations of caries. Each block was produced with segment data to enable automatic marking of students' attempts. This caries block generation process enabled the creation of a large library of disparate carious models calling for a unique solution for each case. Results: A library of caries blocks was built. The blocks hold varying shape, depth and amount of caries within a simulated tooth consisting of enamel, dentine and pulp tissue. The design of the block encouraged the user to follow correct clinical protocols to treat the lesion, while preserving the maximum amount of healthy tissue. Conclusions: We present a novel haptic caries simulation encouraging correct clinical technique based on tactile sensation and realistic disease patterns. The exercises provide a safe environment for novice dental students to practice caries removal.

Our aim was to evaluate haptic virtual reality (VR) simulation with repetitive training as a tool in teaching caries removal (CR) and periodontal pocket probing (PPP) skills. For the CR simulation, multilayered virtual models composed of tooth substance, caries, and pulp were developed. Seven students completed three training sessions each, which were scored based on the volume of the cut region, the number of instances of handpiece overload, and total cutting time. For the PPP task, we developed a virtual periodontal disease model and 26 students received training in measuring pocket depth. Pocket probing force was measured and proficiency was evaluated. In the CR task, scores for the second and third training sessions were significantly higher than for the first training session. We likewise obtained effective repetitive training results for the PPP task. Our simulator was effective at teaching hand skills for both tasks within short-term evaluation.
