This review describes the role of wood extractives, especially fatty and resin acids, in papermaking, as well as the importance of their removal from process waters. One of the main aims is also to illustrate versatile analysis methods for this purpose and highlight recent developments in corresponding applications. Most of the current methods require timeconsuming and laborious sample pretreatment procedures prior to gas chromatography coupled either with flame ionization or mass selective detection. However, some faster, even online techniques with minimum sample pretreatment, are also available, mainly including high performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The advantages and disadvantages of all analytical procedures are briefly discussed.

In this work, multivariate detection limits (MDL) estimator was obtained based on the microelectro-mechanical systems-near infrared (MEMS-NIR) technology coupled with two sampling accessories to assess the detection capability of four quality parameters (glycyrrhizic acid, liquiritin, liquiritigenin and isoliquiritin) in licorice from di®erent geographical regions. 112 licorice samples were divided into two parts (calibration set and prediction set) using KennardStone (KS) method. Four quality parameters were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method according to Chinese pharmacopoeia and previous studies. The MEMS-NIR spectra were acquired from¯ber optic probe (FOP) and integrating sphere, then the partial least squares (PLS) model was obtained using the optimum processing method. Chemometrics indicators have been utilized to assess the PLS model performance. Model assessment using chemometrics indicators is based on relative mean prediction error of all concentration levels, which indicated relatively low sensitivity for low-content analytes (below 1000 parts per million (ppm)). Therefore, MDL estimator was introduced with alpha error and beta error based on good prediction characteristic of low concentration levels. The result suggested that MEMS-NIR technology coupled with¯ber optic probe (FOP) and integrating sphere was able to detect minor analytes. The result further demonstrated that integrating sphere mode (i.e., MDL 0:05;0:05 , 0.22%) was more robust than FOP mode (i.e., MDL 0:05;0:05 , 0.48%). A robust and versatile signal-on fluorescence sensing strategy was developed to provide label-free detection of various target analytes. The strategy used SYBR Green I dye and graphene oxide as signal reporter and signal-to-background ratio enhancer, respectively. Multidrug resistance protein 1 (MDR1) gene and mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) were selected as target analytes to investigate the generality of the method. The linear relationship and specificity of the detections showed that the sensitive and selective analyses of target analytes could be achieved by the proposed strategy with low detection limits of 0.5 and 2.2 nM for MDR1 gene and Hg 2+ , respectively. Moreover, the strategy was used to detect real samples. Analytical results of MDR1 gene in the serum indicated that the developed method is a promising alternative approach for real applications in complex systems. Furthermore, the recovery of the proposed method for Hg 2+ detection was acceptable. Thus, the developed label-free signal-on fluorescence sensing strategy exhibited excellent universality, sensitivity, and handling convenience.
