Show more

“…With nearly one million people distributed in eleven boroughs, and run by eleven mayors, Concepción is the country's second largest metropolitan area and the capital of the Bio Bio region. Spread along the Bio Bio river and the Pacific coastal shore in a halved radial structure, since the 1990s its expansion has been filling in the gaps between central and peripheral boroughs, increasing the population and urban areas to form a metropolitan conurbation (Salinas Varela et al 2010). Despite this spatial transition, the functional structure of jobs and services still concentrates on the two main central boroughs, which suggests an unbalanced bi-central structure (Rojas Quezada et al 2009).…”

“…The photointerpretation consisted of categorizing land uses with 2011 satellite images available in Google Earth software, based on the classification of Salinas and Pérez [6], which consists of a typology of five residential types (dense continuous, mid-dense continuous, discontinuous blocks, discontinuous low density, disperse discontinuous) and three non-residential types (industrial, services, and artificial zones). Through this classification, it is possible to identify land uses that reveal the morphological composition of urban sprawl, as fragmentation beyond the urban boundary increases.…”

“…The data were constructed based on photointerpretation of the periurban areas of these cities between 2003 and 2011; the images are from Google Earth (2011). The categories used in the photointerpretation are based on a typology initially proposed by Salinas and Pérez [6], which identifies residential use areas-differentiated by morphology (continuous or discontinuous) and density (high, medium or low) criteria-as well as categories of industrial and service areas. This typology reveals not only the urban sprawl that has taken place but also its composition: The different uses that have been developed and their forms.…”
