Procedure for Simultaneous Determination of Uranium and Transuranium Elements in Groundwater and Liquid Radioactive Wastes from the Shelter

Abstract: An ion-exchange procedure for simultaneous determination of 234 U, 235 U, 236 U, 238 U, 238 Pu, 239 + 240 Pu, 241 Am, and 244 Cm in groundwater and liquid radioactive wastes is described. The concentration and separation of U and Pu are performed on AV-17 anion exchanger in the chloride form from 9 M HCl. Am and Cm are separated from rare-earth elements by step-by-step elution from KU-2 cation-exchange resin in the NH + 4 form with a-hydroxyisobutyric acid (pH 4.75). Finally, U, Pu, Am, and Cm are determined a… Show more

“…Increasing salinity (e.g., [Na + ] and [Ca 2+ ]), iron ([Fe 3+ ]), and colloid concentrations in the solution resulted generally in decreasing the chemical recovery of Am. A procedure for the separation of Am from rare-earth elements was developed through step-by-step elution from KU-2 cation-exchange resin in the NH 4 + form with α-hydroxyisobutyric acid (pH 4.75) [ 81 ]. Am 3+ cations have a high distribution factor on cation resin at low acidities, which can be easily eluted from the cation exchangers by concentrated acids.…”

“…The error strontium activity measurement was ± 25% at P = 0.95. Uranium, plutonium, and americium were detected by alphaspectrometry after the ion exchange separation [3]. Uranium and plutonium were concentrated and separated on anion exchanger AB-17-8 in Clform obtained from 9 mol/dm 3 of HCl.…”

“…The objects of the study were the waters containing salts, surface-active agents (surfactants), film-forming and complexing agents, mineral oils, other organic compounds and products of their degradation. The uranium content has been measured for two samples: it is equal to 12 and 34 dm 3 ; their pH ranges within 9.63-9.18.…”
