“…However, as mentioned above, steroids and commonly used immunosuppressant drugs do not interfere with PCT metabolism. None of the study centres used OKT-3, the only immunosuppressant known to interfere with PCT production and secretion [35]. Finally, the biomarkers were measured in real time and the results were available to the clinicians treating the patients.…”

“…21,22 However, the specificity of PCT is diminished by the fact that PCT is also elevated in clinical scenarios with systemic noninfectious inflammation as in burn trauma, 23 heat shock, 24 or after administration of anti-lymphocyte globulin. 10,25,26 Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass causes a generalized inflammatory response syndrome; therefore high serum lev- els of PCT have also been shown in these patients in the absence of infection. 7,9,[27][28][29][30][31] Franke et al 13 reported higher PCT levels in patients after on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting than in those after off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery.…”

“…In the last decade, there has been growing evidence that treatment with monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies can upregulate plasma PCT concentrations . Similarly, high PCT levels were found in allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients after antilymphocyte antibody administration .…”

“…In a group of liver transplant recipients, ATG administration was associated with high peak PCT concentrations on post‐operative day 1 (median 53 ng/mL, range 7.9–249.1 ng/mL) when compared to those who did not receive ATG; subsequent ATG doses did not elicit further PCT elevations and levels decreased . In a study of liver transplant recipients treated with OKT3 for steroid‐refractory rejection, plasma PCT levels increased from 1.05 ± 0.45 ng/mL (prior to antibody administration) to 12.1 ± 6.4 ng/mL (24 h after antibody administration) . Treatment with OKT3 for acute rejection has also resulted in elevations of PCT in renal transplant recipients .…”
