Problems of Extra-Galactic Research

Abstract: The present report deals with the basic facts of extra-galactic astronomy. It should be noted that a true picture of the outer stellar systems (galaxies) was formed in astronomy only about forty years ago. As a result, most basic problems concerning the outer galaxies remain unresolved. We, therefore, formulate in the present report a number of problems which, in our view, seem to constitute the most essential points in the further exploration of the outer galaxies. We shall try to keep as close to the facts a… Show more

“…It was totally unclear how the distant pairs of radio lobes could be related to this but we were groping for something that might supply the energy. In August 1961, I attended the IAU meeting in Berkeley where Ambartsumian (1962) emphasized the importance of activity in the nuclei of galaxies. Work inspired by him made the Byurakhan Observatory of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic one of the great centers of research into active galactic nuclei, producing, e.g., the Markarian and Arakelian catalogs.…”

“…As was shown (Barnothy and Barnothy, 1963), a consequent application of the above postulates and of the conservation laws leads to the inference that if n 0 photons of wavelength k 0 and energy E 0 are emitted by a source and have travelled for a time t before reaching the observer, the beam would contain at arrival n photons of wave length k and energy E, where …”

“…Due to the random character of the neutrino impacts, the infrared radiation produced should display a quite considerable intensity fluctuation and the sources of strong infrared radiation may have the properties of secondary nuclei within the nucleus of a galaxy. The neutrino impact could also supply an explanation of the fragmentation of protogalaxies into clusters of galaxies, of the phenomenon of supernovae and of meteor craters in which no traces of meteorites were found (Barnothy and Barnothy, 1967a).…”
