The acceleration of modern technology in the techno gadget era has led to the transformation of modern media highlighted by Generation Z. The aim of this study is to explore how gadget addiction influences the level of depression, anxiety, stress and sleep quality among the samples from the Ministry of Health Training Institution Sungai Buloh, Malaysia. Using the stratified sampling method, a total of 316 college students from various field are surveyed on the Smartphone Problematic Use Questionnaire, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale and Pittsburg Sleeping Quality Index. The Pearson correlation analysis and linear regression are adopted to find the relationship among the variables. Results show that gadget addiction is a predictor of depression, anxiety, stress and sleep disturbances. The findings of descriptive analysis show that the level of addiction, depression, anxiety and stress among the trainers is high. Positive correlations are found between the gadget addiction and levels of depression, anxiety, stress and sleep quality. Levels of depression, anxiety, stress and sleep quality among trainers are significant, with 13%, 10.7%, 12.5% and 3.4% experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress and sleeping disturbance respectively. Therefore, it is generally possible to know that the problem of gadget addiction can interfere with mental health of the users if the use of gadgets is not well controlled. The implications of this study are useful to academics and heavy gadget users and those who are hooked with their gadgets in their everyday life. Further studies in this area are needed to delve deeper into other issues related to each element of gadget addiction in order to reinforce the research framework which will in turn develop a standard guide for controlling gadget use in Malaysia.

Abstract. Este estudio examinó las relaciones entre los rasgos de personalidad de los cinco grandes (extraversión, afabilidad, neuroticismo, responsabilidad y apertura a la experiencia), la tríada oscura (maquiavelismo, psicopatía y narcisismo), la impulsividad y el uso problemático del smartphone. Doscientos dos participantes (52.48% hombres), con edades comprendidas entre los 18 y los 58 años, completaron el Ten-Item Personality Inventory, la Smartphone Addiction Scale, el Dirty Dozen y la escala de impulsividad de Plutchik. Los análisis de correlación mostraron que el uso problemático del smartphone estaba significativamente asociado a la extraversión, el neuroticismo, la impulsividad y todos los rasgos de la tríada oscura. Realizando un análisis de regresión jerárquica, controlando la edad y el sexo, se encontró que la extraversión, el neuroticismo, el maquiavelismo, el narcisismo y la impulsividad fueron predictores significativos del uso problemático del smartphone. Smart technologies as social innovation and complex social issues of the Z generation

Purpose This paper aims to present how contemporary students are self-organizing using smart technologies (ST) and the future social implications of ST. The research model is based on the concepts of the soft system methodology, social systems thinking, innovative smart systems, and cybernetic and knowledge management. Design/methodology/approach The study contains elements of exploratory and descriptive case studies. Narrative analysis and interpretation of the collected data have been carried out. Findings Students mostly use ST to save time when studying and in their free time. Students are surprised by how ST developed and are cautious when imagining how the technology will change and affect their lives. They are concerned regarding several ethical dilemmas of using it, such as privacy and spending time with their loved ones and friends. Students perceive their self-organization in the future as very dependent on the availability of ST in institutional settings (e.g. education and business process) as well as their personal lives. Students discuss their present perceptions about what the future will be and note that social system will be more dynamic in terms of socialization, and loss of personal contact with their friends and family is seen as the main threat. Research limitations/implications The research is qualitative, and the questionnaire was carried out among business students at the Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Practical implications The paper offers an understanding of the usage of ST among business students. This study provides a road map of a few possible ways for usage of ST among students. The topic is also relevant for human resource managers, technology developers and marketing strategists for their better understanding of the behaviour of young people using ST in professional or private environments. Social implications The findings can be useful for professors in identifying different learning methods that are useful for their students. Originality/value The authors offer conceptualizations of ST within the social innovation framework and provide a contemporary understanding young people’s ST usage.
