Coping with Chronic Illness and Disability

“…Alcohol abuse was also found to be positively associated with other forms of disengagement and non-adaptive coping behaviors, such as self-blame (Sholomskas et al, 1990) and escape-avoidance (Heinemann et al, 1994), and inversely related to engagement coping strategies including positive reappraisal, problemsolving, and seeking social support (Heinemann et al, 1994). Finally, Schandler, Cohen, and Vulpe (1996) reported that a positive family history for alcoholism was associated with more use of coping strategies, which reflected acceptance of responsibility, problem-solving, and generally more problem-focused coping. These paradoxical findings were interpreted, by the authors, as suggesting a preference for more effective strategies among those with family history of alcoholism, but an actual use of less effective strategies as indicated by the increased frequency of their alcohol-related problems.…”
