Zusammenfassung Zielsetzung In dem vorliegenden Beitrag wird untersucht, welche Zusammenhänge zwischen der Intensität glücksspielbezogener Probleme (gemäß DSM-5-Kriterien) und der Kenntnis und Akzeptanz von Spielerschutzmaßnahmen bestehen. Methodik Basis der Auswertungen sind die Daten des Glücksspiel-Surveys 2021. Die Datenerhebung erfolgte im III. Quartal 2021 in Form eines Mixed-Mode-Designs, welches sowohl telefonische Interviews (N=7373; Festnetz und Mobil zu gleichen Teilen) als auch onlinegestützte Befragungen (N=4650) beinhaltete. Neben der Gewichtung nach soziodemografischen Merkmalen (Alter, Geschlecht, Region, Schulbildung) erfolgte zusätzlich eine Mode-Gewichtung (2/3 Telefon; 1/3 Online). In dem vorliegenden Beitrag werden ausschließlich Personen (18–70 Jahre) betrachtet, die in den letzten 12 Monaten vor der Befragung an Glücksspielen teilgenommen hatten (N=3704). Ergebnisse Die Kenntnis von Maßnahmen des Jugend- und Spielerschutzes variiert erheblich, wenn nach dem Schweregrad glücksspielbezogener Probleme (DSM-5) differenziert wird. Darüber hinaus wird deutlich, dass insbesondere Maßnahmen, welche Auswirkungen auf die konkrete Spielteilnahme haben (z. B. Begrenzung der Geldeinsätze) bei dem Personenkreis mit einer Glücksspielstörung (>3 DSM-5-Kriterien) eine signifikant geringere Akzeptanz besitzen als bei den unproblematisch Glücksspielenden. Diskussion Es sollten größere Anstrengungen unternommen werden, passgenaue Präventionskonzepte zu entwickeln und umzusetzen. Insbesondere Maßnahmen der indizierten Prävention wie die Limitierung von Spieleinsätzen oder die Selbstsperre sollten verstärkt beworben bzw. diesbezüglich neue Zugänge erprobt werden, um mehr Problemspielende zu erreichen.

Multi-line electronic gambling machines (EGMs) are amongst the gambling products showing the strongest associations with problem gambling symptoms. EGMs are characterized by intermittent reinforcement, salient audio-visual effects and high event frequencies. This paper examines the design features of EGMs through the lens of neurocomputational theories of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that playing a central role in substance-use-disorders, which in turn share clinical and behavioral features with disordered gambling. Dopamine is involved in various aspects of learning, motivation and cognition, ranging from reinforcement learning via prediction errors to the signaling of multiple aspects of stimulus saliency and uncertainty. A careful consideration of the design of modern multi-line EGMs reveals the ways in which these products may elicit a host of dopaminergic effects within their nested anticipation-outcome structure. Potential links between neural, cognitive/affective and clinical/behavioral levels of analysis with respect to EGM gambling are outlined, and implications for the clinical features of gambling disorder as well as policy and regulation are discussed.

IntroductionWhile research in online sports betting is dominated by studies using objective player tracking data from providers to identify risky gambling behavior, basicresearch has identified various putative individual risk factors assumed to underlie the development of gambling disorder across all types of gambling. This study aims to examine individual risk factors and their longitudinal clinical relevance in online sports bettors.MethodsGerman online sports bettors (N = 607, Mage = 34, 92% male) from a provider based sample took part in an online survey. The study team randomly preselected customers to be invited. N = 325 (53,45%) of the participants also took part in an online follow-up survey one year later. Crosssectional and longitudinal associations of putative risk factors and DSM-5 gambling disorder in online sports bettors were analyzed. These risk factors include alcohol and tobacco use, impulsivity, difficulties in emotion identification, emotion regulation strategies, comorbid mental disorders and stress.ResultsWe found more pronounced impulsivity, difficulties in emotion identification, emotion suppression, comorbid mental disorders and stress were cross-sectionally associated with gambling disorder, and longitudinally predicted gambling disorder in online sports bettors (with the exception of emotion suppression). In an overall model only lack of premeditation and perceived helplessness remained significant as predictors for gambling disorder. Online sports bettors with gambling disorder predominantly showed more pronounced risk factors, which were also confirmed longitudinally as relevant for the maintenance of gambling disorder.DiscussionRisk factors such as impulsivity and stress and appropriate coping mechanisms should consequently be integrated not only into prevention efforts to identify individuals at risk early, but also into intervention efforts to tailor treatment.
