Problem behaviour, caregiver reactions, and impact among caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s disease

Abstract: Caregiver reaction to problem behaviours was more highly associated with impact from caregiving than the actual frequency of the behaviours. These findings have great implications for intervention programs. Caregivers, especially females, need to receive individualized, specific education/training on how to understand and manage disruptive and depressive behaviour in persons with AD.

“…While our results were consistent with findings from a previous research study using mRMBC in patients with dementia showing that memory problems were most frequently reported by caregivers (mean = 5.08, SD 1.55), we found that depression was the problem that most bothered the caregivers in our study [37]. A similar study conducted among caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease revealed that memory problems were most frequently reported, but disruptive behaviors elicited the most negative reactions [45]. Cognitive deficits create care demands for the caregivers and increase the number of tasks with which the caregiver must render assistance.…”

Robinson found that there was a need for individualized education and training to understand persons with Alzheimer's especially for female caregivers (51). Eight family caregivers to elderly demented care receivers reported heavy burden.…”

“…The type of problems displayed by the care recipient are also an important factor as it is suggested that carers of dementia patients experience greater stress than carers of individuals with physical disabilities, and it is specifically behaviour problems rather than cognitive impairment that cause most stress. 13 …”
