Probiotics as Potential Biological Immunomodulators in the Management of Oral Lichen Planus: What’s New?

Abstract: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a T cell-mediated chronic inflammatory disorder with multifactorial aetiology and malignant transformation potential. Despite the treatments so far identified, new tailored and safe specific measures are needed. Recently, human microbiota imbalance has been linked to several immune-mediated diseases, opening new therapeutic perspectives for probiotics; besides their ability to directly interact with the host microbiota, they also display a strain-specific immune-modulatory effect. T… Show more

“…Probiotic-based adjuvant therapies may be useful for treating or even prevent these chronic infections and restoring the oral microbiota, achieving benefits for oral health and the overall wellbeing [21,[23][24][25]. The major goal of probiotic treatment is to enhance the presence of beneficial commensal bacteria, which might be able to trigger an anti-inflammatory response as well as an antibacterial and anti-adhesive effect against pathogenic microbes [26][27][28].…”
