Probiotics and potential applications for alternative poultry production systems

Abstract: Concerns over animal welfare continue to be a critical component of law and policies associated with commercial food animal production. Social and market pressures are the driving forces behind the legislation and result in the change of poultry production management systems. As a result, the movement toward cage-free and aviary-based egg production systems has become standard practices. Cage-based systems being replaced by alternative methods that offer a suitable housing environment to meet or exceed poultry… Show more

“…Probiotics are living microbes and after being supplementation to the feed, it maintains normal intestine commensal equilibrium. The probiotics has been reported to fortify the gut physiology including digestive and absorptive functions [8], which ultimately leads to obtain better growth and FCR in broilers [27,28], turkeys [29], Pigs [30], Sheep [31], Rabbits [32], Fishes [33], Canine [34] Goats [35] and in Cattle [36]. It has been studied that developed egg weight, size and mass in layers are associated with offering Probiotics [35,37], along with repressed cholesterol level in chickens [36,38].…”

“…This underscores the tremendous opportunity for the growth of the organic poultry sector in the coming years, as predicted by the Organic Trade Association ( Greene, 2013 ; Wan et al, 2019 ). Although there is significant scope for expanding organic poultry, concerns over the safety of organic meat and eggs potentially contaminated with foodborne pathogens could curtail the opportunity ( Mogelonsky, 2008 ; El Jeni et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Hence, antibiotics in feed have been banned ( Van Boeckel et al., 2015 ), which however, has brought a series of negative impacts on growth performance and health status in poultry production. There is increasing urgency to find safe green feed additives for the food animal industry ( Jeni et al., 2021 ). Probiotics offer exciting opportunities to improve growth performance and health status in livestock ( Lutful Kabir, 2009 ), and the major mechanism could be summarized as enhancement of nutrients absorption ( Yeo and Kim, 1997 ; Jin et al., 2000 ; Wang and Gu, 2010 ), stimulation of host immune system ( Azad et al., 2018 ), and modulation of gut microbial composition ( Angelakis, 2017 ; Clavijo and Florez, 2018 ; Guo et al., 2021 ).…”
