“…MIA, which induces various behavioral phenotypes associated with autism in offspring, has been identified as a vital environmental risk factor for ASD (Choi et al, 2016;Estes & McAllister, 2016;Knuesel et al, 2014;Malkova et al, 2012), in spite of a few clinical epidemiologic studies reporting no association between MIA and ASD when looking at the total period of pregnancy (Atladottir et al, 2010). Considering the immunomodulatory and neuroprotective effects of probiotic bacteria (Abildgaard, Elfving, Hokland, Wegener, & Lund, 2017;Delcenserie et al, 2008;Keunen, van Elburg, van Bel, & Benders, 2015;Saez-Lara et al, 2015), oral probiotics may be useful as a means to decrease the incidence of ASD. Our present study supports this hypothesis by showing that the administration of oral probiotics during pregnancy prevented a series of MIA-induced ASD-relevant deficits, including impairments in social behavior, repetitive behavior, stereotyped behavior, depression-like behavior, and anxiety-like behavior.…”
