Probiotic Therapy for Prevention of Necrotizing Enterocolitis in Preterm Infants – A Review

Abstract: Purpose: Preterm infants are prone to systemic infections due to increased intestinal permeability to potentially pathogens resulting from immature intestinal function, frequent use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, delay in initiating enteral feeding, infection control procedures and sterilization of milk. Very Low Birth Weight infants, particularly Extremely Low Birth Weight infants are at higher risk due to abnormal pattern of colonization, which may contribute to the pathogenesis of neonatal Necrotizing Enter… Show more

“…It was attributed to the chemical structure of MD with short chain of polysaccharides resulting in elevating hygroscopicity causing disruption in the stability of LPD2 during storage [ 29 ]. In contrast, INL exhibited significantly lower solubility compared to MD due to its high DP [ 30 ]. Bustamante et al .…”

“…Smoother and more spherical surfaces observed in ELPD2 with INL3 was attributed to the complex blend of branching polysaccharides of INL3, known for its capacity to create dense and uniform particles. 30 So, ELPD2 with INL3 are more stable, flow more easily, and release their contents more slowly compared to ELPD2 with MD10.…”
