Probiotic Supplements on Oncology Patients’ Treatment-Related Side Effects: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

Abstract: Cancer affects more than 19.3 million people and has become the second leading cause of death worldwide. Chemo- and radiotherapy, the most common procedures in these patients, often produce unpleasant treatment-related side effects that have a direct impact on the quality of life of these patients. However, innovative therapeutic strategies such as probiotics are being implemented to manage these complications. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of probiotics supplements as a therapeutic strategy … Show more

Not surprisingly, the best outcomes occur when there is a clear understanding of the specific microbes, genes, metabolic changes, and installation conditions that are needed to support microbiome-driven physiological benefits.…”

“…We discussed results from studies showing that Lactobacilli and Bifidobacterium affect the occurrence and progression of CRC in animal models (89)(90)(91). Some probiotics can help to not only enhance the effects of anti-cancer therapeutic agents but also alleviate the side effects caused by conventional cancer treatments (108). However, these probiotics also have the potential to act as opportunistic pathogens that can easily penetrate the intestinal barrier and immune environment after weakening by intestinal tumors (109).…”

“…To this end, unfavorable microbial signatures should be ablated, and beneficial communities could be enhanced. Microbiome modulation in order to improve anticancer therapy may be achieved via FMT, pre-/pro-/post- and antibiotics, dietary modifications, and phage therapy approaches in order to enhance anticancer therapy [ 23 , 95 , 118 , 119 , 120 , 121 ]. The latter represents a potent option for targeting specific bacteria with minimum off-target effects; this is an almost impossible challenge with antibiotic treatment, which usually eradicates a broad spectrum of microbiota.…”
