Probiotic characterization of Bacillus subtilis P223 isolated from kimchi

Abstract: Probiotic characteristics of P223 isolated from kimchi were investigated in this study. Spore cells of P223 showed high tolerance to artificial gastric juice (pH 2.5, 0.3% pepsin, 3 h) and bile salts (0.3% oxgall, 24 h). Spore cells of P223 showed more adherence to intestinal cells (HT-29 cells) than vegetative cells. In addition, P223 showed high autoaggregation ability, similar to a commercial strain ( ATCC 700160). Moreover, its coaggregation abilities with pathogens were strong. The adherence of three path… Show more

“…The distinction between α and β hemolysis is of relevance in some areas, such as the assessment of the safety of probiotics (Jeon et al 2017), but it is not generally made in other settings because both types of hemolysis are usually considered a virulence determinant and one of the many phenotypes studied to determine the clinical relevance of the species and/or strains (Bayley 1997;Ramachandran 2013). For this reason, in this study, isolates with either α-hemolytic or β-hemolytic activity are referred to as hemolytic.…”

“…L. plantarum 200655 did not produce b-glucuronidase, alkaline phosphate, esterase, esterase lipase, lipase, cystine arylamidase, trypsin, a-chymotrypsin, acid phosphatase, a-mannosidase, and a-fucosidase. Because b-glucuronidase is a bacterial carcinogenic enzyme that exerts negative effects in the liver, LAB should not produce b-glucuronidase (Jeon et al, 2017). The potential probiotic L. brevis FI10700 and L. perolens FI10842 did not produce b-glucuronidase (Son et al, 2017).…”

“…Kimchi is a famous traditional vegetable food in Korea that is fermented by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) at low temperature (Jeon et al, 2017). During the storage period, LAB produce the unique flavor of kimchi and compounds beneficial for health by changing the composition of kimchi through fermentation (Lee et al, 2016).…”
