Probing the top-quark width through ratios of resonance contributions of e + e − → W + W − b b ¯ $$ {\mathrm{e}}^{+}{\mathrm{e}}^{-}\to {\mathrm{W}}^{+}{\mathrm{W}}^{-}\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $$

Abstract: In this paper we propose a method to gain access to the top-quark width which exploits off-shell regions in the process e + e − → W + W − bb. Working at next-toleading order in QCD we show that carefully selected ratios of off-shell regions to on-shell regions in the reconstructed top and anti-top invariant mass spectra are, independently of the coupling g tbW , sensitive to the top-quark width. We explore this approach for different centre of mass energies and initial-state beam polarisations at e + e − colli… Show more

“…The total cross section corresponding to the study of ref. [25], therein computed with Madgraph5 aMC@NLO [51], has been reproduced. Moreover, we find excellent agreement between Whizard, Sherpa [52] and Munich 4 for the parameter set given in section 5.1.…”

“…The idea is motivated by recent proposals to measure the Higgs boson width from nonresonant production [16][17][18][19], which has interesting beyond the Standard Model (BSM) sensitivity [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27] and 1 Similar ideas were recently discussed in Ref. [12][13][14]. The key difference with respect to this analysis are that these studies (I) were performed at parton-level only, (II) do not propose a physical observable for measuring the cross-section, and (III) do not extract any results with LHC data (and in the case of Ref.…”
