Probing the Relative Photoinjection Yields of Monomer and Aggregated Dyes into ZnO Crystals

Abstract: Cyanine dyes, often used in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), form a range of molecular species from monomers to large H and J aggregates in both solution and when adsorbed at a photoelectrode surface. To determine the relative capability of the different dye species to inject photoexcited electrons into a wideband gap oxide semiconductor, sensitization at a single-crystal zinc oxide surface was studied by simultaneous attenuated reflection (ATR) ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption and photocurrent spect… Show more

“…Yet, Liu et al did not observe the line-distributed features of N3 nanoaggregates across the TiO 2 surface. Meanwhile, Takeda and Parkinson observed such nanoaggregates by AFM on different dye···semiconductor interfaces: squaraine dyes on SnS 2 , and cyanine dyes on TiO 2 and on ZnO. , To this end, the work of Parkinson at al . is in common with our study; although they used anatase TiO 2 .…”

“…The fluorescence levels of dyes in Figure were normalized for clarity. The nonemissive character of their excited state has, in the same fashion, become commonly accepted as a general feature of H-aggregates when stacked onto a surface of substrates, and their interaction with light is sharply modified. All OH-substituted dyes exhibited aggregation features at the TiO 2 surface to the red and blue region of the spectrum, with a maximum of adsorption ranging from 600 to 700 nm (Figure ).…”
