Probing the quantum vacuum with ultra intense laser pulses

Abstract: Abstract. This article presents: 1) The theoretical background of strong field physics and vacuum structure and stability; 2) The instrumental developments in the area of pulse lasers and considers the physics case for ultra intense laser facilities; and 3) Discussion of the applied and fundamental uses of ultra-intense lasers.

“…Today there is a new interest to return to the physics of QED of strong fields in a new experimental realm. In the focal point of very short pulse ultra intense lasers [93] we approach if not today, then in the near tomorrow the critical fields condition. The ultra intense lasers just like the heavy-ion collisions draw their importance from the fact that they form the unique laboratory based testing ground for QED of strong fields.…”

“…Nevertheless, recent progress in laser physics allows one to hope that an experimental observation of the effect can be possible in the near future; see Refs. [14][15][16][17][18] for the review. Electron-hole pair creation from the vacuum becomes also an observable effect in graphene and similar nanostructures in laboratory; see, e.g., [19,20].…”

“…This is natural scale, defining relativistic "locality" in a quantum setting. Given the recent work with ultra-powerful lasers [71], perhaps quantitative tests of this type will become possible in the coming decades).…”
