Probing the linear polarization of photons in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions

Abstract: We propose to measure the linear polarization of the external electromagnetic fields of a relativistic heavy ion through azimuthal asymmetries in dilepton production in ultraperipheral collisions. The asymmetries estimated with the equivalent photon approximation are shown to be sizable.PACS numbers: I. INTRODUCTIONTransverse momentum dependent(TMD) parton distribution function [1] is one of the most powerful theoretical tools that are utilized to explore the three-dimensional imaging of nuleon/nuclei. Among m… Show more

“…However, this is beyond the scope of the present paper and will be addressed in a separate publication. Of course, if b ⊥ is integrated out in the above cross section formula, one can recover the cross section [27] derived using the equivalent photon approximation. This provides a nice consistency check.…”

“…In particular, ultraperipheral events provide clear cuts of electromagnetic processes without contaminations from QCD processes and/or medium effects (see refs. [48][49][50][51][52][53] for recent theoretical proposals and refs. [25][26][27][28][29] for significant progress in the recent measurements with RHIC and the LHC).…”

“…One other feature not yet included in Starlight, but which is incorporated into SuperChic [33], is the impact of linear polarization on the dilepton distributions. It was predicted by Li et al [34] that the correlation between the single lepton and the lepton pair azimuthal angles should show a clear sinusoidal behavior 1 + A 2 cos(2∆Φ) + A 4 cos(4∆φ), for which STAR has reported a significant observation [11]. This was interpreted by STAR as being analogous to vacuum birefringence, only observed until now in astrophysical measurements.…”
