Probing supervoids with weak lensing

Abstract: The cosmic microwave background (CMB) has non-Gaussian features in the temperature fluctuations. An anomalous cold spot surrounded with a hot ring, called the Cold Spot is one of such features. If a large underdence region (supervoid) resides towards the Cold Spot, we would be able to detect a systematic shape distortion in the images of background source galaxies via weak lensing effect. In order to estimate the detectability of such signals, we used the data of N-body simulations to simulate full-sky ray-tra… Show more

“…We then presented a robust S/N 5 detection of the Eridanus supervoid from the reconstructed DES Y3 mass maps (see Table 2), in line with the expectations from related N-body simulation analyses by Higuchi & Inoue (2018). We found no significant difference in the lensing profiles when considering different mass map reconstruction methods (Kaiser-Squires, Wiener filter, Null B-modes).…”

“…Considering all the evidence presented, we report a robust S/N 5 detection of a supervoid from the DES Y3 mass maps aligned with the CS. Importantly, this finding is fully consistent with the expectation of a S/N 4 detection from an Eridanus-like supervoid based on the simulation analysis by Higuchi & Inoue (2018).…”

“…Since convergence field traces a matter density between sources and an observer, contiguous underdense regions can be found by smoothing the convergence maps (Higuchi & Inoue 2018). Figure 1 shows a schematic view of our underdense search method.…”

“…As such, we can clearly see the effect of the decrement for the massive haloes wherein the significance of the differences is ≥ 3 in total. We compared the results around the largest underdense region to the predictions of the Press-Schechter theory by placing two top-hat voids along the line of sight with assumed properties measured by Higuchi & Inoue (2018). The parameters (density contrast δ, comoving radius χ and redshift z) of the assumed voids were (−0.16, 63h −1 Mpc, 0.23) and (−0.09, 151h −1 Mpc, 0.36).…”
